you would multiply 16 by 2 and get 32
72-32=40
divide 40 by 2 and get 20

Let short side = S

Long side = L

Perimeter = 2*(L + S)

72  =  2*(L + 16)

72/2 = (L + 16)

36 = L + 16

36 - 16 = L

20 = L

Length of longest side = 20 feet.
