-3 = x^2 + 4x + 1

Add 3 to both sides.

0 = x^2 + 4x + 4

Switch sides.

x^2 + 4x + 4 = 0

For the quadratic formula, a = 1, b = 4, c = 4

discriminant = b^2 - 4ac = 4^2 - 4(1)(4) = 16 - 16 = 0

When the discriminant equals zero, there is a single real solution.

Answer: There is a single, real solution.
