How might you explain Alexanders decision not to kill anyone who took sanctuary in the temple?

The reason why Alexander decided not to kill anyone who took sanctuary in the temple was because he felt and considered that he will get punished by the gods because it will turn out as a form of "power struggle". He did not want to offend the gods by killing those who were in their house and were believing in their faith.
