The 1896 landmark Supreme Court decision Plessy v. Ferguson established that the policy of “separate but equal” was legal and states could pass laws requiring segregation of the races. This made people think that it was okay to separate people based on their race. This is why segregation was made legal, ergo this had a pretty big impact at the beginning of the Jim Crow era.
