Linguistic, archaeological, and historical evidence indicate that the ancestors of these groups were members of hunting-and-gathering cultures that migrated to the region from present-day Canada, arriving by approximately ad 1500, although no earlier than ad 1100. The Navajo occupied a portion of the Colorado Plateau adjacent to Hopi lands.
