Not producing or not able to produce anything. Not being of use. Not achieving much, less nothing.

Ex.

You and your classmates are doing a project and someone in the group isn't helping very much or not at all. That person is being "unproductive".

A factory has a malfunction and is unable to continue producing the product. The factory is, as of now, "unproductive".
